High Seas Biodiversity 🐋 BBNJ Agreement PrepCom1

Over the past two weeks, I had the opportunity to cover the first session of the Preparatory Commission for the #BBNJ Agreement — an important step toward the operationalization of this landmark treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction ⚓️

Building on my experience covering the UN Sixth Committee on legal questions over the past two years, I deepened my understanding of #ocean governance, #biodiversity protection, and treaty implementation processes.

This session, structured around working groups rather than formal plenary meetings, offered a unique professional exercise, sharpening both my journalistic and analytical skills in covering multilateral negotiations.

It was also incredibly inspiring to witness delegations work together to shape the future implementation of the BBNJ Agreement. I am also proud that my country, #Belgium, is a candidate to host the future BBNJ Secretariat, a testament to its commitment to international cooperation and marine conservation 🇧🇪🇺🇳
