"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers" (Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, United Nations, 1948).
Press Freedom is a core principle of democracy, safeguarding the right to gather, disseminate, and exchange information and ideas without undue influence or censorship from governments and overarching authorities.Â
This year, World Press Freedom Day is dedicated to the vital role of journalism and freedom of expression in addressing the current global environmental challenges. We must continue to protect journalists, ensure the rights to freedom of expression, freedom of scientific research, and access to key sources of information, and fight dis- and misinformation through ethical journalism practices.Â
